Fancy Dress 24/7

Do you remember the scene in Bridget Jones’ Diary where she is invited to a fancy dress party and arrives in “Playboy Bunny” attire, including cotton tail, only to find that the party was not fancy dress at all? Who doesn’t relive that scene everything they knock on the door of what they
hope is a fancy dress party? Years ago, there were few choices in fancy dress.
If you were a girl, you could be a nurse or a French maid. You could be a belly dancer, or a sexy nun. Men could simply don a toga and they would be good to go.
But now, there are so many other choices for fancy dress. Whether you choose to be your favorite television or movie character, a historic character, sports star, famous person, animal, or superhero – the choice is up to you.
Television and movie characters are fun for fancy dress because you not only look like them, you play the role. If you are Sherlock Holmes, or Tom Cruise in “Risky Business”, you can act the part. You can’t beat Superman or Batman, and who could resist a grown-up Harry Potter arriving at their fancy dress party?
Female television and movie characters for fancy dress are virtually neverending: Wonder Woman, Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz”, Princess Leia (with the hairknots!), or any number of Disney characters.
Not everyone can pull off dressing like a historic character. It takes a lot of self-confidence to “become” a gladiator, a Viking, an Egyptian king, or a Medieval warrior. Perhaps dressing like a basic pirate for fancy dress night is the easiest way to go.
Female fancy dress in the historic category falls much in line with that of the men’s – in fact the historic category of fancy dress is the best one for couples. You can go to the fancy dress party as Mr. and Mrs. Viking, Mr. and Mrs. Medieval couple, King and Queen, or a Victorian couple.

Sports stars are fun for fancy dress because they change, year by year. This year you could be Michael Phelps (if you could get away with that Speedo!), and perhaps last year you were a more acceptable David Beckham. A woman can put on a leotard and find a few gold medals to put around her neck and she becomes the gymnast of the year.
Dressing as a famous person can be timely, but that type of fancy dress almost always lasts one season only. You may only be able to use that Margaret Thatcher or Bill Clinton mask one time only. The Barack Obama mask you use this year may stump people next year! Masquerading as Britney Spears may not only stump people, but may bring on a bad reputation for you, too!
If you are as ashamed to be seen in fancy dress as I am, dressing as an animal is almost always the easiest way to go. A bunny, a gorilla, a lion, or a gorilla all offer you the opportunity to hide your face and play the part without anyone finding out who you are. Clown outfits also have the same advantage – with a bit of make-up and some big floppy red shoes, you can hide your true personae and enjoy yourself.
But he question still remains, is there such a thing as a fun fancy dress party? Bridget Jones didn’t think so.
